Daanish- Ank Remedial Centre

Daanish India Foundation has collaborated with NGO ANK to run a Remedial Centre for out of school slum children near Bhowapur Kaushambi, Ghaziabad started in 2012. We have taught over 720 children at this centre and at present, 120 children studying here.

Number of Years: 5  year

Target Segment: Out of school slum children from the nearby community, mostly children of construction workers, who are not part of any formal education system. The children are in the age group of 5-12 years.

Need of the Project: A significant number of children in India, often of construction workers, miss the boat to a formal education system due to their movement from one place to another. Our goal is to offer a bridge education learning centre where we educate these children and get them at par with students their age. We then help them in securing admission in government schools. Our Remedial Learning Centre especially caters to those children who have missed the school boat, or are having trouble coping with their level in school.

Aim of the project: To train the children and integrate them with mainstream government schools in a year or two/help them to get at par with other children in their class.

Subject Taught: The Centre teaches English (Grammar & Writing Skills) Hindi, Mathematics, & Soft Skills.  Children are divided into two groups based on their age and prior knowledge.

Community Mobilization:  Efforts are made to go into the community, speak to parents of the children explaining them the importance of a good education, and making sure they send the children regularly for classes.  Stress is on communication with the community through door to door campaign & direct interaction and dialogue with the parents.

Monitoring Process: Regular assessment tests throughout the term

Impact: There has been a drastic improvement in the skill set and confidence of the children studying at our centre. So far we have had 720 admissions of children from this centre and mainstreamed over 350 in government schools nearby.

Teaching Methodology: We have a morning and afternoon slot, wherein students are further divided into two sections based on age and knowledge levels. Individual attention is given to each student to get them up to speed, but in a warm and vibrant atmosphere, conducive to learning.

Additional Activities Done: Drawing Class, Yoga
